Im taking a quick break from cooking to post a peek and my thanksgiving table. It’s not totally done yet… (and I know some of the napkins aren’t ironed properly. Working on that now!)

My inspiration was the chinoiserie-like tables of Joe Nye. Obviously, I’m a little twit compared to him. And I just don’t have all the supplies(because when I was getting married and people were giving me stuff, I was not educated or interested and so I ended up with weak resources.)
I used the versace plates my grandmother gave me as a wedding gift along with my gold ware. The tablecloth is a neon orange. Yes its really neon in certain lights, and in others its a sweet potato color. Last year I bought a bunch of polyester table cloths on line HERE in every color under the sun. This is the first time Im using the orange. I actually would MUCH prefer to not use a table cloth at all, but my table is super delicate rosewood.

The bodega was very ill equipped today. Somedays they are stocked, and others they aren’t… So I went monochrome. When in doubt go monochrome. The greenery is something I always buy. I love it. Looks like mini-evergreens to me, very autumnal but also elegant year round.

I put the bread plate off to the side of the dinner plate because I wanted the white of the plate to show. Is that enough of a reason? I don’t know. I just felt it needed it.

There is a glass crisis in my house. Despite the fact that I bought 24 (YES 24!!!) glasses just last year, I literally do not have enough unbroken glasses to serve 10 people. It’s a scary thing. I mean, I can mix and match, and I will obviously have to. Also, in terms of crystal and wine glasses, not every one can drink the same liquor because I don’t have enough glasses! Crazy right?

Anyway, here it is in the room… I’m still not done, and from this angle the flowers look messy….

Gotta run, my kitchen is calling! Enjoy! Happy T-day!

When I first started this blog, the tagline was “Fashion. Food. Furniture.” However, much to my husband’s dismay, I now tag it as “Art. Design. Fashion.” wherever you need to put a tagline, like on my business card, for example… (One friend saw the card and said- I am looking at this, and I still have no idea what you do! HA!!!)

Anyway… So basically, I don’t BRING IT in the cooking department that often. Sure, I cobble together meals and throw together food-stuffs, but I don’t give it the attention and love that cooking really good food needs and deserves.

BUT! I’m making Thanksgiving!!! Now is my chance to erase all the tepid soups and mushy stir-frys from my dear husband’s memory!!!

SO! Here is what I’m making….

1. INA’s Roast Turkey.

I made this last time, came out awesome….I think I cooked mine upside down for the first 2 hours and then flipped it. Honestly, turkey cooking is not as hard as it seems. Its just like cooking a chicken, except its bigger, so it takes longer. Spice and salt liberally and you will be ok!

2. Mushroom Stuffing.

I don’t know what made me choose this. I just thought it sounded good. I may add some ground meat and season differently… not sure.

3. Alton Brown’s Shepherd’s Pie.

My sister has made this in individual servings by spooning them into wonton wrappers. ITS AWESOME.

4. Roasted Root Vegetables

I make this all the time, not just for Thanksgiving. It has two incarnations. 1 is with savory spices, the second is doused with maple syrup, honey and a touch of brown sugar + sea salt. Both great versions and as long as you keep shuffling the veggies as they roast you can’t screw it up.

I USUALLY, put my rice in a bundt pan and then surround it with the roasted veggies. But this crowd(my fam) has seen that before. So I need to come up with something new. Maybe a root veggie mashed potato type of thing? Or a soup?

5. Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Are Brussel Sprouts not the turn around vegetable of the decade? I add onion powder to the brussel sprouts while they are roasting to give them a little more flavor.

6. Spare Ribs

I’m on the fence on this one, don’t know if I really need it… but its always good.

7. Non-Dairy Pumpkin Pie

We Jews don’t eat meat and dairy at the same meal, so I need to make a dairy free pumpkin pie. Im using this recipe.

AND I don’t know what else yet… I have corn on the cob I want to incorporate, salads to include, fruit to cut, gravy to make, wild rice to cook, etc… I know its only the day before, but I still haven’t nailed everything down yet!

And, as the photos in this post indicate, I obviously love to set the table! All table settings are by Joe Nye . He makes me want to invest in some chinoiserie tablecloths! (Can you believe Juliana on Fashion Police didn’t know what chinoiserie was this week? Any one else catch that?) I love each and every one of these tablescapes. Yes, they are traditional and feminine, but its Thanksgiving! If not now, WHEN?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

You guys know how I am obsessed with Haviland China, and wish I bought it when I got married and had credits at various stores etc, and how I will have it one day (my husband actually made this deal with me last year: cook x number of times, and he would be HAPPY to buy me the china. I failed.) Anyway…

West Elm just came out with these banded desert plates, and they are dead ringers, in a more pastel, french macaroon kinda way. I haven’t seen them in person yet, but they look great in the pictures. I wish they came as a full set… but I feel like the desert plate is a great size for appetizers before a meal and dessert later on… Plus you could always layer it with another dinner plate.

They are on sale now for $6! So I think it would be prudent to pick up about 20-30. A wise friend of mine told me to always have a simple cheap dish in service for 30 at your house. You never know when you might be having a party… and mixing and matching dishes (unless intentionally and artfully done) is just so déclassé, darling. I sound like the countess Luann, now, don’t I?

So, as far as I am concerned, the question is: all the colors as a set, or just all black?

Buy them HERE.

New Restaurant Alert! I don’t usually cover new restaurants, unless, you guessed it, I dig the decor.

The uptown offshoot of ”East Village American comfort food/bistro spot The Smith opened to the public this Saturday in a gigantic new space complete with subway tiles, liquor walls, and a shoe shine in the bathroom.” They also have a photo booth in the bathroom, which happens to be co-ed.

Imagine Im walking around mid-town east, looking at casual and totally non fancy NY city buildings when one day OUT OF NOWHERE, this appears:

BAM! Its like someone took Badgley Mischka’s dream of a kitchen and turned it into and ENTIRE BUILDING. How could you not notice this white gleaming crispy gem in a sea of midtown east banality?

Inside, there is over 10,00 Sq ft of subway tiled walls with black/gray grout please, cafe chairs and ceilings of wood, bars made of of zinc, black casement windows…

Its cafe, bistro heaven.

I was totally digging the in house seltzer. A WALL of seltzer making:

Love the nautical lighting, you can get yourself some of that heaven with these sconces HERE.

So how was the food? I’m not the right person to ask, because I don’t eat 80% of the things on the menu, but what I had was yummy. It scored 8 out of ten points for being cool and uptown ( We uptowners always looking for fun places to go out uptown on lazy nights, because as you know when you live in NYC, sometimes leaving a ten block radius is too much.) 1 point for homemade and endless seltzer (I mentioned this 3x, yes I have a problem with carbonation) and another hundred points for the casement windows. So all together 100+8+1= 109 on a scale from 1-10. Want a normal person’s perspective? When we walked out my husband said to me “It was very cool and all, and the food was good, but doesn’t it feel a little like we were eating in a bathroom?” Well, yes honey. A very cool and awesome bathroom.

There is nothing like 4 hours in Central Park with a toddler with no stroller to get you in the, holy crap I need a drink and why don’t they have happy hour for moms, mode.

I used to be a greyhound girl (fresh squeezed grapefruit only please!) now I’ve got a new drink.

Brooklyn Gin+ Fever Tree Tonic. Those brands in particular.

Brooklyn Gin is a super delish locally made and mostly hand made gin (local for me, anyhow) and Fever Tree is the most awesome tonic I’ve ever tasted. It doesn’t taste like club soda with a pound of corn syrup, it actually has a distinct, fragrant smell and taste… like a citrus and lavender perfume mixed with Pellegrino… and I mean that in the best way possible. We got a bottle of Brooklyn Gin as a gift from someone that lives in Brooklyn (duh) and I don’t know how we (my husband) found Fever Tree… but I’m converted. It’s just soooo much better than your average vodka tonic it’s SCARY.

Here’s how to make it the ULTIMATE as per Fever Tree’s website:

HOW TO:

Your favourite gin, {I say Brooklyn Gin} ….. They are all different and with Fever-Tree you will actually get a mixer which enhances their tastes.

A balloon glass. In Spain they have the real thing. Big balloon on an elegant stem. If you don’t have exactly the right one, try a glass suitable for red wine or cognac. The point being that the aroma of this gin & tonic is worth savouring and a balloon glass will concentrate that aroma on the nose.

Fresh ice - at least four big cubes. Clear cubes from spring water if possible {Don’t you love how there is gourmet ICE now?}

Fever-Tree tonic water from the fridge.

All I know is that its 7:01 PM, both kids are in their beds, hubby is going to poker and my body is aching and I can’t wait to order in vegan curry type foods (vegetarian crap as my hub calls it), pour myself a drink and watch the latest installment of <del>The Hunger Games.</del> I mean Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. (Speaking of drinks and TV, I take serious issue with Bravo making fun of Kim’s little “kim-toxication”. It’s not a joke. It’s a serious and sad thing. The whole franchise is starting to smell like greed and desperation. Yowsa.)

What are you doing tonight?

(And before some dummy calls me an alcoholic, NO, I’m not.)

I love a good Watermelon + Feta Salad. I made this last week for Cookie’s birthday party (for the parents, not the kids!) And even though my entire family thought it was beyond gross without even trying it, the guests loved it! I dont know why it seems so strange to people, I know people who salt their watermelon! Salty and sweet is the best combo! And serving fruit with cheese is a no brainer too.

Anyway, try this recipe it’s a good one.

How To: Watermelon Salad with Feta, Olives, and Basil

6 cups watermelon, cut into cubes (roughly half a small watermelon)
1 1/2 cups Greek feta, rough chopped
1 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and halved
1/4 cup basil leaves, cut chiffonade (tiny thin ribbons)
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Cut and prepare the ingredients for the salad. To mix the vinaigrette, whisk the balsamic into the olive oil until emulsified. 20 – 30 minutes before serving, toss the ingredients together and lightly dress the salad. Serve garnished with basil leaves.

What else is going on in my life? Well this has been the third week since June that I have been racked with flu like symptoms. Shivering, sweating, cant swallow, dizzy, congested, achey… Yep. Get that – 3/8 of my summer has been spent sick, sick, sick.

So the first 2 times, I chalked it up to the nightly antics of my 2 kids. I seriously dont get more than 3 hours consecutive sleep without someone waking up. This week was such a lovely one- While I was sick, little miss 3 year old snuck into our bed…. AND PEED ON ME. Not on my husband. ON ME. Worst night ever.

Anyway, this third time I was really down and out and I started to think that there could be Something Else going on that isnt just lack of sleep. Something Else bad and horrible that is killing my immune system and turning me into a shivering sack of bones every other week. So I went to the doctor. We are doing bloodwork to check for anemia or some other minor problems, but the doctor assured me that its not Something Else. His prescription: you are going to need to get 8 hours consecutive sleep at least a few times a week. Although, I have no idea how you are going to do that.

LOVELY.

And in other news, I sold a bunch of paintings this week, including that super huge one I posted a few weeks ago!!! Im going to philly next week to install it!

Thats all for now. Have a great weekend everyone!

My teenage sisters made dinner for the whole family last night…. lets not talk about how I didnt know how to boil pasta until I got married. (Seriously, put the pasta in before the water, like eggs.) Anyway, the entire dinner was AMAZING… but for desert they served these watermelon granitas… I loved them so much I just had to post a recipe. What a great desert for a Fourth of July BBQ!

Ingredients

9 cups (about 2 1/2 pounds) seeded, cubedwatermelon

1/3 cup fresh lime juice

1 cup mint, finely chopped, plus more for garnish

1/3 cup sugar

Directions

Working in 2 batches, puree watermelon in a food processor. Strain puree through a sieve and strain out solids, forcing liquid out with a wooden spoon. Discard solids. Combine the watermelon puree, lime juice, mint and sugar in a 9 by 13-inch metal pan. Place mixture in the freezer, scraping thoroughly with a fork every 20 to 30 minutes for about 2 1/2 hours, or until the granita resembles coarse crystals. Scrape 1 last time and spoon into parfait glasses or bowls. Top with a mint sprig.

Happy Graduation to my sisters Stephanie and Jennifer on their graduations! And, of course, to everyone else out there graduating!

I took home a ton of these tassels from M&J one day for no reason- then I came up with this little idea. Cute huh?

Also of note- I found this source for simple, available in any size and any color tablecloths. The ones I ordered are polyester… They were pretty cheap so I got a few different colors including neon orange and lilac:

I want to buy 10 more! Available HERE.

I dont even really like using tablecloths, but my table is so delicate that I have to.

The ruffled placemats (I adore them) are from Parci Parla in Brooklyn. (347) 587-5179 ‎Map HERE. ‎They also now carry the goldware I’m using.

Happy Graduation!

This may seem silly, but I dont know why it never occurred to me before.

My two year old daughter is still not trustworthy with glass plates, and we have a few kiddie plates, but they are just OK in the looks department…. Now that its “dining al fresco” season, why not stock up on melamine plates to use for your kid? You can get really fab ones this time of year, so you wont have to compromise on style.

I bought these today from West Elm:

(The fork and spoon are from Pottery Barn Kids)

And I bought a few so if a friend comes over I dont have to scramble all over looking for two matching plates so that the kids dont fight! I totally could have picked something that matched my house a little bit better though!

The cover of the Style section of The Times today has an article about Tim Ferriss, the frat boy turned guru behind the best selling books 4 Hour Work Week and the 4 Hour Body… both books are aimed at one thing: getting results from your diet/work etc… in the least amount of time possible i.e. efficiency. While Tim seems like an absolute nut (he recommends taking ice baths to speed up your metabolism and does all sorts of strange experiments on himself) my husband has been on this diet for the past month and has lost almost 20 pound as the diet promises! Not to mention- it’s pretty easy and it lets you cheat. Oh- and you dont have to work out. Now a bunch his friends are on it too, and they are all losing weight, obsessed with the diet. They even text each other pictures of their monstrous cheat meals!

(I must say that my husband now eats less on his CHEAT DAY than he did on an actual normal day pre-diet. If nothing else, this diet gave him a food awareness that he never had before.)

Read The NYTimes article HERE.

I really want to go on this diet too. But something tells me mountains full of legumes and no carbs are not going to go over well with my newborn. Such a bummer- ahhh the sacrifices of motherhood.

I nabbed this excerpt from Gizmodo. Its got the basic tenets of the diet.

4-Hour Body – The Slow-Carb Diet

Tim ferriss — Tim Ferriss has tried a lot of diets. Here’s one that he thinks is the best. And it is pretty easy to follow.

How to Lose 20 Pounds in 30 Days Without Exercise

Out of clutter, find simplicity.
-Albert Einstein

11:34 A.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2009, SAN FRANCISCO

Text message from London, eight hours ahead, meant to impress:
This is my dinner. Happy times!
The accompanying photo: a pepperoni and sausage pizza so large it doesn’t fit on the screen.
Chris A., a fellow experimenter, and I were having our weekly virtual date.

Text response from me:
This is my breakfast. BREAKFAST. Can you hear the insulin pouring out of my eyes? Woohoo! Ante up, fat boy.
My accompanying photo: two bear claws, two chocolate croissants, grapefruit juice, and a large
coffee.

Response from Chris:
LOL . . . please don’t make me do this . . .

And so it continued, a text-message eating contest. The truth is, I do some version of this every Saturday, and thousands of people over the last four years have joined me in doing the same. In between pizzas and bear claws, the net result is that the average follower has lost 19 pounds of fat, and a surprising number have lost more than 100 pounds total. This odd approach has produced something of a small revolution. Let me explain exactly how Chris and I reach and maintain sub-12% body fat, often sub-10%, by strategically eating like pigs.

The Slow-Carb Diet-Better Fat-Loss Through Simplicity

It is possible to lose 20 pounds of body fat in 30 days by optimizing any of three factors: exercise, diet, or a drug/supplement regimen. Twenty pounds for most people means moving down at least two clothing sizes, whether that’s going from a size 14 dress to a size 10 or from an XXL shirt to a large. The waist and hips show an even more dramatic reduction in circumference.
By April 6, 2007, as an example, I had cut from nearly 180 pounds to 165 pounds in six weeks, while adding about 10 pounds of muscle, which means I lost approximately 25 pounds of fat. The changes aren’t subtle.
The diet that I’ll introduce in this chapter-the Slow-Carb Diet-is the only diet besides the rather extreme Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) that has produced veins across my abdomen, which is the last place I lose fat. There are just five simple rules to follow:

RULE 1: AVOID “WHITE” CARBOHYDRATES.

Avoid any carbohydrate that is, or can be, white. The following foods are prohibited, except for within 30 minutes of finishing a resistance-training workout like those described in the “From Geek to Freak” or “Occam’s Protocol” chapters: all bread, rice (including brown), cereal, potatoes, pasta, tortillas, and fried food with breading. If you avoid eating the aforementioned foods and anything else white, you’ll be safe.
Just for fun, another reason to avoid the whities: chlorine dioxide, one of the chemicals used to bleach flour (even if later made brown again, a common trick), combines with residual protein in most of these foods to form alloxan. Researchers use alloxan in lab rats to induce diabetes. That’s right-it’s used to produce diabetes. This is bad news if you eat anything white or “enriched.”
Don’t eat white stuff unless you want to get fatter.

RULE 2: EAT THE SAME FEW MEALS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat-loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. There are 47,000 products in the average U.S. grocery store, but only a handful of them won’t make you fat.
Mix and match from the following list, constructing each meal with one pick from each of the three groups. I’ve starred the choices that produce the fastest fat-loss for me:

Proteins
*Egg whites with 1–2 whole eggs for flavor (or, if organic, 2–5 whole eggs, including yolks)
*Chicken breast or thigh
*Black beans
*Beef (preferably grass-fed)
Pork
*Fish

Legumes
*Lentils (also called “dal” or “daal”)
Pinto beans
Red beans
Soybeans

Vegetables
*Spinach
*Mixed vegetables (including broccoli, cauliflower, or any other cruciferous vegetables)
*Sauerkraut, kimchee (full explanation of these later in “Damage Control”)
Asparagus
Peas
Broccoli
Green beans

Eat as much as you like of the above food items, but keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of french fries, potatoes, or rice.
Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food (after swapping out rice for vegetables) to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the Slow-Carb Diet. If you have to pay an extra $1–3 to substitute at a restaurant, consider it your six-pack tax, the nominal fee you pay to be lean. Most people who go on “low”-carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit because they consume insufficient calories. A half-cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a half-cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load.
Eating more frequently than four times per day might be helpful on higher-carb diets to prevent gorging, but it’s not necessary with the ingredients we’re using. Eating more frequent meals also appears to have no enhancing effect on resting metabolic rate, despite claims to the contrary.
Frequent meals can be used in some circumstances (see “The Last Mile”), but not for this reason.
The following meal schedule is based on a late sleep schedule, as I’m a night owl who gives up the ghost at 2:00 a.m. at the earliest, usually with wineglass or book still in hand, à la heroin addict. Adjust your meals to fit your schedule, but make sure to have your first meal within an hour of waking. Meals are approximately four hours apart.

10:00 am – Breakfast
2:00 pm – Lunch
6:30 pm – Smaller second lunch
8:00–9:00 pm – Recreation or sports training, if scheduled.
10:00 pm – Dinner
12:00 am – Glass of red wine and Discovery Channel before bed

Here are some of my meals that recur again and again:

Breakfast (home): Scrambled Eggology® pourable egg whites with one whole egg, black beans, and mixed vegetables warmed up or cooked in a microwave using Pyrex® containers.
Lunch (Mexican restaurant): Grass-fed organic beef, pinto beans, mixed vegetables, and extra guacamole.
Dinner (home): Grass-fed organic beef (from Trader Joe’s), lentils, and mixed vegetables.

Just remember: this diet is, first and foremost, intended to be effective, not fun. It can be fun with a few tweaks (the next chapter covers this), but that’s not the goal.

RULE 3: DON’T DRINK CALORIES.

Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened tea, coffee (with no more than two tablespoons of cream; I suggest using cinnamon instead), or other no-calorie/low-calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk (including soy milk), normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. Limit diet soft drinks to no more than 16 ounces per day if you can, as the aspartame can stimulate weight gain.
I’m a wine fanatic and have one to two glasses of red wine almost every evening. It doesn’t appear to have any negative impact on my rate of fat-loss. Red wine is by no means required for this diet to work, but it’s 100% allowed (unlike white wines and beer, both of which should be avoided). Up to two glasses of red per night, no more.

RULE 4: DON’T EAT FRUIT.

Humans don’t need fruit six days a week, and they certainly don’t need it year-round. If your ancestors were from Europe, for example, how much fruit did they eat in the winter 500 years ago? Think they had Florida oranges in December? Not a chance. But you’re still here, so the lineage somehow survived.
The only exceptions to the no-fruit rule are tomatoes and avocadoes, and the latter should be eaten in moderation (no more than one cup or one meal per day). Otherwise, just say no to fruit and its principal sugar, fructose, which is converted to glycerol phosphate more efficiently than almost all other carbohydrates. Glycerol phosphate p triglycerides (via the liver) p fat storage. There are a few biochemical exceptions to this, but avoiding fruit six days per week is the most reliable policy.
But what’s this “six days a week” business? It’s the seventh day that allows you, if you so desire, to eat peach crepes and banana bread until you go into a coma.

RULE 5: TAKE ONE DAY OFF PER WEEK.

I recommend Saturdays as your Dieters Gone Wild (DGW) day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. If I drank beer, I’d have a few pints of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.
I make myself a little sick each Saturday and don’t want to look at any junk for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat-loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function and conversion of T4 to T3, etc.) doesn’t downshift from extended caloric restriction.
That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia. There are no limits or boundaries during this day of gluttonous enjoyment. There is absolutely no calorie counting on this diet, on this day or any other.
Start the diet at least five days before your designated cheat day. If you choose Saturday, for example, I would suggest starting your diet on a Monday.

That’s All, Folks!

If the founding fathers could sum up our government in a six-page constitution, the above is all we need to summarize rapid fat-loss for 99.99% of the population. Followed to the letter, I’ve never seen it fail. Never. When you feel mired in details or confused by the latest-and-greatest
contradictory advice, return to this short chapter. All you need to remember is:

Rule 1: Avoid “white” carbohydrates (or anything that can be white).
Rule 2: Eat the same few meals over and over again.
Rule 3: Don’t drink calories.
Rule 4: Don’t eat fruit.
Rule 5: Take one day off per week and go nuts.

$1.34 PER MEAL?

Andrew Hyde is community director at TechStars, a well-known start-up incubator in Boulder,
Colorado. He is also an Internet-famous big bargain hunter. I use “big” in both the figurative and literal senses: Andrew is 6’5″ and 245 pounds. I should say that he was 245 pounds. In his first two weeks on the Slow-Carb Diet, he lost 10 pounds and, perhaps more impressive, racked up incredibly unimpressive costs:

Total per-week food cost: $37.70
Average per-meal cost: $1.34

And this was including organic grass-fed beef! If he’d eaten a big salad three times a week instead of a few proteins, his weekly cost would have been $31.70. He repeated four meals:

BREAKFAST: Egg whites, one whole egg, mixed vegetables, chicken breast Mixed vegetables, peas, spinach (salad)
LUNCH: Mixed vegetables, peas, spinach (salad)
SECOND LUNCH: Chicken thigh, black beans, mixed vegtables
DINNER: Beef (or pork), asparagus, pinto beans

His exact shopping list was simplicity itself. The prices are the per line totals:

1x Eggs (12 pack) $1.20
4x Mixed vegetables (1-lb bags) $6
1x Chicken breast $2
1x Organic peas (2-lb bag) $2
2x Spinach (3-lb bags) $6
3x Chicken thigh $9
2x Grass-fed organic beef (0.5-lb cuts) $4
2x Pork (1-lb cuts) $3
2x Asparagus bundles $2
1x Pinto beans (1-lb bag) $1.50
1x Black beans (1-lb bag) $1

Getting these prices didn’t require a degree in negotiation or dozens of hours of searching. Andrew looked for discounted items near expiration date and shopped at smaller stores, including a Mexican grocery store, where he bought all of his dried beans.
Just to restate an important point: Andrew is an active 6’5″, 245-pound, 26-year-old male, and he exercised three times a week during his Slow-Carb Diet experiment. He’s not a small organism to feed. He’s also not unique in his experience.
Though you might not get to $1.34 per meal, his two-week experiment shows what thousands of others have been surprised to learn about the Slow-Carb Diet: it’s damn cheap. The myth that eating right is expensive is exactly that: a myth.

THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT: FRUCTOSE

Can fruit juice really screw up fat-loss?
Oh, yes. And it screws up much more. Not to speculate, I tested the effect of fructose in two tests, the first during a no-fructose diet (no juice, no fruit) and the second after one week of consuming 14 ounces-about 1.5 large glasses-of pulp-free orange juice upon waking and before bed. The orange juice was the only thing distinguishing diets A and B. The changes were incredible.

Before (10/16, no fructose) and after (10/23, orange juice):
Cholesterol: 203 -> 243 (out of “healthy” range)
LDL: 127 -> 165 (also out of range)

There were two other values that shot up unexpectedly:

Albumin: 4.3 -> 4.9 (out of range)
Iron: 71 -> 191 (!) (out of range aka into the stratosphere)

Albumin binds to testosterone and renders it inert, much like SHBG (discussed in “Sex Machine”) but weaker. I don’t want either to be out-of-range high. Bad for the manly arts. If you said “Holy sh*t!” when you saw the iron jump, we’re in the same boat. This result was completely out of the blue and is not good, especially in men. It might come as a surprise, but men don’t menstruate. This means that men lack a good method for clearing out excessive iron, which can be toxic. The increase in iron was far more alarming to me than the changes in cholesterol.
Here is just one of several explanations from the research literature:

In addition to contributing to metabolic abnormalities, the consumption of fructose has been reported to affect homeostasis of numerous trace elements. Fructose has been shown to increase iron absorption in humans and experimental animals. Fructose intake [also] decreases the activity of the copper enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduces the concentration of serum and hepatic copper.

The moral of the story? Don’t drink fruit juice, and absolutely avoid a high-fructose diet. It doesn’t do the body good.
