The Big Black Sconce.
I know I post about this often, but this whole sconce as art, sculpture and lighting device is just so happening for me right now. This one thing: a long armed wall light- could solve so many design problems! Like: No overhead lighting in a NYC apartment (we all know what that means: concrete ceilings and 800 lamps), large awkward wall behind sofa that one can’t afford/doesnt want to fill with art, rooms that are too blah and need a JOLT of life… Well, just those few for now. But those are important! Plus a lot of these are plug ins, so you don’t have to have them hard wired. I love the idea of these pieces in addition to a single painting, alone on a wall, or even in a gallery… So basically, I always like it. Ha.
I did a little round up of my favorite pieces from around the web… not all of them are gigantic, but they are all the little !! or ?? or the ;;;;;; that a room needs.
High End:
1. Prouvé Potence Lamp $1720
2.Serge Mouille Two Arm Sconce – on sale for $4420
5.Tube Sconce $625.
And mid/high to low end:
PB Teen, $199, aint no shame in it! Atelier de Troupe, Large: $595, Small $395 WEST ELM, Long Arm Sconce- on sale for $99
I can think of at least 3 people that need big lamps hanging out of their walls right now. And unfortunately, none of them are me.
My favorite new things around the web.
As much as I love a good sale, I absolutely LOVE when there are new fun products in stores that we aren’t sick to death of seeing yet… And I also love getting catalogs. Like a lot. Even bad and boring ones like Smith & Noble… (And now after I read them I throw them right in the garbage, instead of letting them pile up. It’s my new life.)
Anyway, there are exciting things happening! West elm has goldware! PB Teen has the furry chair that everyone is going to put with a parsons desk or mirrored vanity in 2 months, you’ll know when you see it all over pinterest that I called it. Jamie Herzlinger made one bad ass x based stool and I thought I was over those. I collect belts, and these are some good ones. Floral Jeans! Stools that are supposed to be for a nursery, but I think would kick ass anywhere! Coolest appetizer plates ever at Cb2! Green, anywhere anytime! Serena & Lily has potentially the best bedside table ever made!
So go, browse, shop and be merry. It’s Sketch42: I do the work so you don’t have to!

A room for no one.

Not particularly balanced (too much shag, to many leggy chairs) but I pulled it together for no particular reason, and I kinda like the vibe. A little feminine, but in a cool way. And that rug is amazing. HERE. Stools from West Elm, Chairs from Jayson Home, Couch is on sale at ABC HERE.. Pouf from Clayton Gray Home HERE. Print by Christian Chaize.
Warm & Cozy Bedroom Inspiration.
I don’t know who I envision sleeping in this room: a cool boy, a very cool couple, a single dude? I don’t know… I just know that I like it. And with a few tweaks ( change the rug and color of blanket) I would also put a girl in it.
Original room is by Ryan Korban. My version is much less sexy, but I kind of did that on purpose.
1. Pendelton Blanket $218
2. Table Lamp $273
5. Thonet Chair, $150
6. Side Table $395
7. Light Box $175 – I LOVE this for a kids room(or anyone, really). You put it on their night stand and they just tap it to open the box and BAM- light!
8. Lumbar Mongolian Pillow $129 All you need is this and a blanket and your bed is made!
Interior Design Through The Ages: THE 70s, THEN & NOW.
We all know that the current trend in home decor is totally leaning towards a 70s and 80s vibe… But for those of us too young to remember the 70s (also, we weren’t alive yet!) and enamored with its leftovers, what exactly does that mean?
I mean, try going vintage shopping with someone who lived through the 70s as an adult. You see an awesome pair of chromed out tube chairs, they see their first cheap dinette set… You see a sexy rattan arm chair, they see a piece of porch furniture. You see a rad brass lamp, they see a cruddy…. well, you get the picture. It’s hard to convince someone that the stuff they threw away so happily 20 and 30 years ago is now back, and in such high demand…(I read somewhere that new generations consistently gravitate toward the era of their grandparents, don’t know if thats true or not, but it makes sense to me! DUH!)
So lets check it out. I found this blog that hilariously uploaded the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the Better Homes and Gardens Decorating Book from the 70s. They mock each picture relentlessly…
But me, hey, I kinda like it. And maybe you will to. So here’s to THEN, and here’s to NOW, cause its all pretty awesome in a kitschy way… If a bit wacky.

It’s no accident that half of these rooms are by Kelly Wearstler and Miles Redd, I mean they ARE the ones who ushered back in the trend! I wish I could have found a better match for that burgundy velvet sofa photo… I freaking love it, and would live in it. I’d also take that marbled stairwell, but change the carpet on the stairs…
Anyway… I thought this was hilarious and fun! Hope you enjoyed our trip down memory lane… What are your favorite regurgitated furniture trends? What do you hope NEVER comes back?
