Inside Roxanne Assoulin’s Amazing Studio.

Jewelry designer Roxanne Assoulin is truly an inspiration. Anyone who knows her can attest to that… Aside from being the mother-in-law of the outstanding Rosie Assoulin, she’s been creating jewelry in NYC for over 30 years, and is one of the sweetest, hardest working and most aesthetically on point women I have ever met. She was one of Rosie’s inspirations growing up, and interning for her was how Rosie met her son and future husband!  I stopped into her Flatiron studio to check it out, and it was like a creative candy land- She’s got 12 foot long mood boards, bakers racks and trays full of jewelry that she’s offering up like delicious desserts! Teams and teams of people hustling, creating, stringing, gluing, designing. I loved every second of it. She took me into her office and took me inside her inspiration notebooks. AKA what people did before pinterest. As I was looking through her books, I got IT. I immediately understood her, her brand, her aesthetic, and how its stayed so consistent for 20 years. I felt like I was reading into her creative soul, in a way. The books contain torn out photos, inspirational text, hand written notes, and more… We use the notebooks as backdrop to display Roxanne’s latest collection: An Uncomplicated Indulgence – the candy colored chokers and bracelets that every cool girl is wearing.

Roxanne started her career with an interest in fashion design. She fell into accessory design when she was buying buttons and zippers and someone handed her some hair combs. She loved the instant gratification of designing accessories. At 19, she was creating hair pieces for the likes of Vera Wang and Norma Kamali. “Color has always been a big motivation for me, I saw a bracelet in a magazine and I was inspired to make some of my own. I brought them to open call at Bendel’s – when it was the chicest place ever in the early 80’s. I had lined up 120 bracelets in a basket – color coordinated in different skins and leathers, and they took the whole basket!” From there, Roxanne created a tray of handmade product that she shopped around to all the major retail stores. They were all riveted, and the press soon followed with write ups in Vogue and Harper’s. Three years later she took a show room in Manhattan and began hiring her staff, many of whom are still with her today.

DSC_5954 Roxanne quotes Elizabeth Gilbert – “‘ Im talking about living a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear.” ‘ You never know when ideas will hit, but you have to have courage to have an idea. I look at magazines and something captures my eye, a color, a stripe on a car, a hazard light, and I think, oh that could be interesting.” The tiles that she based An Uncomplicated Indulgence on have been sitting in her office for 20 years, but she just now had the vision for the line.  “I don’t know where the inspiration comes, it comes when it’s right…When I do well, I do it out of a sense of curiosity or love, and I love it and want to wear it.” This is non-jewelry jewelry, she claims, it’s happy and playful like candy. “I think people are fatigued from fashion at times, they want authenticity and originality… they want to identify with the product and the person behind it.”

“I think the creative process is a gift, I get an idea and I’m overwhelmed with it,” Roxanne tells me, “There were times, 10 years, where I couldn’t get an idea… The well does run dry sometimes but it does come back. I wake up with the sun, and sleep soundly at night. I walk everywhere and I feel better than I did 20 years ago! I’m happy and I live a good life, I don’t plan for the future because I could never have planned for this.”

Seeing inside Roxanne’s studio and spending time with her was nothing short of magical! Thanks for sharing your work and world with us Roxanne!

My favorite part of the day was looking through her inspiration notebooks… Seeing her hand written notes, you can see how real the process is for her.
