The One Room Challenge | The Pink Room.

IMG_4495

Hey! Soon I can’t believe it, but I’m doing the very popular Calling it Home One Room Challenge this season. For those not familiar – a bunch of bloggers and designers each take on a decorating project of one room, which they complete in 6 weeks – and share with the readers once a week.

This is week one, intro and inspo week. Sooooo, admittedly, most of my “design” projects have been for my own self. Which is a good thing, to me, cause I can do whatever I want, answer to know one, and take my sweet time coming up with a plan. For my own self, I’m not even sure I believe in “decorating” per say, I think I just prefer to decorate slowly over time and let all the pieces I love live together and decorate themselves. But, alas, for this project, I’ve got no rooms left to decorate. I’m all out of blank space. My college age sister, however, still lives at home in her childhood bedroom. Which she passionately detests. She has been BEGGING me to help her redo her room for at least 6 years now, so when I was asked to do the ORC, I thought this would be a good opportunity to help her out. Now, my mom, is essentially also the client here, and she is all – Im not interested in spending money to redo that room, I like it the way it is. And my sister, is in college… so, yea. You get the picture. Plus one is all, SHE NEEDS A DRESSER FOR HER JUNK, and the other is, NO I DONT, DONT ASK HER. Fun times. Family. Hmmmm.

Anyway, part of why my sister hates the room. Its bubble gum pink head to toe, inch to inch. It has my mom’s childhood 4 poster bed in it, which is a twin and is literally not capable of holding a person who weighs more than 80 lbs, even though its BEAUTIFUL, its rickety AF. AND, she desperately wants black out shades. Her three requirements were: white duvet, blackouts, new bed. Thats it. The rest is up to me. The problem for me is this: I actually like the room in a 90’s throwback badass kinda way. I think its rad. I believe in living with “Time Capsule” interiors and aesthetically, I love this room. I purposely didn’t actually shoot this room w a real camera, because I felt like I would make it look TOO GOOD, and you all would like it too much and the before and after would suck because it would be like, damn she ruined that room and turned it into THIS boring thing?! So yea, I was hesitant to even redo the room at all. However, after spending some time in there,  I see why my sister hates it. So much of it is non functional. I get what she wants. A teenager or college age kid living at home pretty much spends all their time in their room, and she needs to have the room work for her. So I’m trying to get her a new desk, a new bed, thats bigger, blackouts, asap, a new rug. Here’s what, Im keeping the room pink though. I may tone the color down one notch or two. But the pink closet doors up top – all pink, I just can’t with how beautiful I think that is. My goal is to try to enhance the room and make it work for her, and not totally turn it into something else. My mom, who is totally NOT into change, would also be more on board with that.

OK so step one: Here are some “Before” shots that I didn’t take, my sis sent them over one night:

(In some of the pics I took off the floral drapes to measure.) There are some things I love about it. I think the color being so continuous and onto the ceiling is baller. I think the pink is fab. I love the bed (I’m taking it for Cookie!) But we can def make it a better functioning room for an adult, don’t you think?

Here are some pink room inspo pics. Pink or “blush” as they call is, is legit the hottest color of the season, so this should not be hard, right?

So happy you’re participating in the ORC. You and your sister had some pretty bad ass childhood rooms! Love them as well and everything in your grandma’s house!

  6. I have to say, I kinda love the pink from floor to ceiling. It is super trendy these days… I can’t wait to see how you transform it from childhood room to adult space! I’m sure it will be awesome!

  14. Nicole says:

Holy cow, I thought for a minute that you were serious about the room being really good! The haunted house lace curtains + the old lady flower printed bedding (wit matching foot stool!) + the mini straw hats on the wall for “art” ! Your poor sister, she deserves an award for living in that room.

  15. Leah says:

I’m beyond excited to see you’re participating this year. I know it will have your unique cool girl vibe all over it (also your art in it I hope!)! That pink would be hard for me to paint over too. Can’t wait to see what you decide to do!
