Did you watch the Oscars? Of course you did. It was pleasant, right? Ellen’s jokes didn’t always land, but she was affable and the whole thing went down pretty smoothly, didn’t it? And now on to the dresses. It seems this year everyone was going for safe and “timeless” and there weren’t really any major talking points or splashes, right? To me there were a few stand outs, and everyone else looked mostly pretty good. Except for one thing: the nude, griege and metallic dresses need to stop. They are just so blah and half the party is wearing versions of the same dress. MAKE IT STOP! OK, so here were my faves to least faves…
Niomi Watts in Calvin Klein. She looks modern, edgy and classic and just generally awesome.
This is not the most flattering picture of her, but Charlize Theron in Dior, when she came on the screen I yelped.
So if you do want to wear a nude sparkly ensemble, you can’t, because Cate Blanchett did it better. Armani. Emma Watson wore a sparkly muscle T and skirt by Vera Wang. I freakin LOVE it.
Bette Midler: Thanks to Reem Acra for making this for me “in my size”?!?!? She looks amazing though.
Statuesque in Versace.
Cant even deal with this. He’s almost TOO good-looking.
Here’s where things start getting meh for me. Julia Roberts always looks strange in clothes to me. In Givenchy. Kerry Washington in Jason Wu. Above the hand looks fine, below its just rumply and messy.
I don’t understand this. She’s spectacularly stunning, yes. But the (unflattering) near nudity on top and the fact that this was a big year for her boobs strikes me as a little strange? Maybe thats the whole point?
Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen. Pretty and nice. It’s a little stiff looking?
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior. This is FINE, yes. I still think she looks 1000x better with hair. Speaking of J Law, I read a great article about her and The History of the “COOL GIRL.” It’s a very interesting take on what it takes to be considered “cool” – IE be a tomboy who is gorgeous.
This was the most divisive of the night. Lupita – I’m in LOVE with her normally. Obviously, as we all should be. But I’m underwhelmed by this custom Prada. I like the dress well enough, but that headband… not digging. I get that she wanted to have a “fairy tale moment” but she really looks like a Disney princess, and that’s just not something I’m into.
And this is literally the only dress that I actively disliked, everything else was pretty good even if it was safe-ish right? Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel.
What did you guys think?
