Best and Worst Dressed | Oscars 2014.

Did you watch the Oscars? Of course you did. It was pleasant, right? Ellen’s jokes didn’t always land, but she was affable and the whole thing went down pretty smoothly, didn’t it? And now on to the dresses. It seems this year everyone was going for safe and “timeless” and there weren’t really any major talking points or splashes, right? To me there were a few stand outs, and everyone else looked mostly pretty good. Except for one thing: the nude, griege and metallic dresses need to stop. They are just so blah and half the party is wearing versions of the same dress. MAKE IT STOP! OK, so here were my faves to least faves…

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Niomi Watts in Calvin Klein. She looks modern, edgy and classic and just generally awesome.  US-OSCARS-ARRIVALS

This is not the most flattering picture of her, but Charlize Theron in Dior, when she came on the screen I yelped.  US-OSCARS-ARRIVALS

So if you do want to wear a nude sparkly ensemble, you can’t, because Cate Blanchett did it better. Armani.  86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Emma Watson wore a sparkly muscle T and skirt by Vera Wang. I freakin LOVE it.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals I actually loved this on Jada Pinkett Smith. Versace.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Bette Midler: Thanks to Reem Acra for making this for me “in my size”?!?!?  She looks amazing though.

US-OSCARS-ARRIVALS Margot Robbie is the best looking woman in Hollywood. Saint Laurent.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Olivia Wild is the best dressed pregnant woman in Hollywood.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Statuesque in Versace.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Cant even deal with this. He’s almost TOO good-looking.

Here’s where things start getting meh for me. 86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Julia Roberts always looks strange in clothes to me. In Givenchy.  86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Kerry Washington in Jason Wu. Above the hand looks fine, below its just rumply and messy.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals I don’t understand this. She’s spectacularly stunning, yes. But the (unflattering) near nudity on top and the fact that this was a big year for her boobs strikes me as a little strange? Maybe thats the whole point?

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen. Pretty and nice. It’s a little stiff looking?

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals Jennifer Lawrence in Dior. This is FINE, yes. I still think she looks 1000x better with hair. Speaking of J Law, I read a great article about her and The History of the “COOL GIRL.” It’s a very interesting take on what it takes to be considered “cool” – IE be a tomboy who is gorgeous.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals This was the most divisive of the night. Lupita – I’m in LOVE with her normally. Obviously, as we all should be. But I’m underwhelmed by this custom Prada. I like the dress well enough, but that headband… not digging. I get that she wanted to have a “fairy tale moment” but she really looks like a Disney princess, and that’s just not something I’m into.

86th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals And this is literally the only dress that I actively disliked, everything else was pretty good even if it was safe-ish right?  Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel.

What did you guys think?

I agree with all of your choices although I’m on the fence about Jada Pinkett Smith. I’m not in love with the dress but she’s beautiful and her body is amazing. My favorite was Kate Hudson.

You kill me with your dead-on review. Julia Roberts does look weird in clothes–and whoopi goldberg stole her look…gross

  4. hmm.. we are usually on the same page. we were with a lot…esp. naomi, she was on my best dressed.
but i thought lupita and sandra looked fucking amazing. while i would have liked lupita wo the headband you can’t argue with that dress. it’s princess-y wo being ott. and i HATED margot robbie and think she lost her hotness somewhere at the dye shop. that dress was super boring.

    • Nicole Cohen says:

Im just not into princess-y. Like I wish “I want to feel like a princess” was not even something girls wanted. But whatever. I agree about Margot Robbie, I only saw a few photos when I posted this but when I saw her moving later last night, I thought it was just eh, and that she needs to still be blond.
Also, Sandra did look great, but I just didn’t love the dress.
