ART CRAZE // Neon Signs.

Before I even get to the blog post, I just have to say that the only thing I miss about NYC is the freakin WiFi. If you only knew how many times I had to refresh my bullshit browser and reload, and wait for pictures to upload…. UGH. I spent 45 minutes just going back and forth between our wifi and the neighbors, then I just left the pictures to load and went and did some stuff, came back and it’s still a disaster. 260000_10151053444513994_820664670_n

Anyway, art trends are as weird and random as any other trend. And one of the biggest  in art this year has been neon sign wordage… It’s everywhere/ was all over Basel etc. I’m not sure how I feel about it.  First there is the romantic work of Britartist Tracey Emin and the artists she’s inspired. It’s a bit saccharine for my taste, even though its supposed to be moving and romantic and deeply personal. I get it, I just wouldn’t hang it.

Then there are the more sarcastic/ironic pieces by artists like Tim Etchells.cdfd2e1478edf56d8e1a9d94d56bf518106d393763f399ac5eb40894fee981d6

I find the whole thing strange…even as I admit there is something kinda cool about it. Taking the seediness of neon lights – once used just for store fronts and in “edgy” college dorms, and putting it into glamorous apartments -it’s interesting? Why cant I flesh out my opinion on this? I don’t know.  item1.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.moda-operandi-02-front-desk

Anyway, this entire post is just to say that you can totally get/make your own neon signage by buying individual letters from Michele Varian. (What would I even want to write on my wall? Any ideas?)

  1. i like them in that ironic sort of way. i like seeing them in photographs but i would honestly probably never turn mine on. i already keep it super dark in my house as it is.

  2. Its the kind of thing that when I first saw it I hated it…and then the internet and blogs play their magic…and after more and more rounds…I kind of like now….SO cool that you can easily make your own…you always find the best stuff. I’m so not witty….so my message would probably be lame…hmm…I will think about it though…. I hate bad internet connections…I know the exasperation you were dealing with!

Aw, I love it! Yea, I totally aim to see interesting/beautiful things in unexpected places… Thanks for thinking of me- Very cool.

  3. I’m not so sure how I feel about the words but I saw a cloud shaped one in a nursery recently perhaps on Pinterest and I thought it was sweet. Also not sure if I would actually turn it on besides perhaps a night light in a nursery but they do photograph well!

  4. Personally, I’m loving the whole neon sign craze. Especially neon signs that resemble hand lettering. I probably would never hang one in my apartment being that I get enough neon lights coming in from my window. Ah, the joys of living in the city lol.
