Before I even get to the blog post, I just have to say that the only thing I miss about NYC is the freakin WiFi. If you only knew how many times I had to refresh my bullshit browser and reload, and wait for pictures to upload…. UGH. I spent 45 minutes just going back and forth between our wifi and the neighbors, then I just left the pictures to load and went and did some stuff, came back and it’s still a disaster.
Anyway, art trends are as weird and random as any other trend. And one of the biggest in art this year has been neon sign wordage… It’s everywhere/ was all over Basel etc. I’m not sure how I feel about it. First there is the romantic work of Britartist Tracey Emin and the artists she’s inspired. It’s a bit saccharine for my taste, even though its supposed to be moving and romantic and deeply personal. I get it, I just wouldn’t hang it.
I find the whole thing strange…even as I admit there is something kinda cool about it. Taking the seediness of neon lights – once used just for store fronts and in “edgy” college dorms, and putting it into glamorous apartments -it’s interesting? Why cant I flesh out my opinion on this? I don’t know.
Anyway, this entire post is just to say that you can totally get/make your own neon signage by buying individual letters from Michele Varian. (What would I even want to write on my wall? Any ideas?)
