Moody Broody.

Two moody apartments in Elle Decor, the first is a largely concrete converted air raid bunker in Berlin.

And the second, is the ebayed and lacquered home of stylist Jackie Astier. What do you guys think of it? I already got some emails from people telling me how much they loved it, BUT I read a few people online saying black lacquer, brass apartments are “Played Out”…

I mean, it has a lot of similar elements as my apartment, and you know I’m sick of that… But I still think its really well done, and I like it.

Thoughts?

ALSO, My friends at C&C Concierge are giving away a free pair of BLANK NYC turquoise jeans! I wouldn’t want you guys to miss out! Go join the contest! HERE.

  1. Black, white, and brass will never play out in my book because they’re the backbone of my personal style! Of course, I LOVE all of this! Inspired today!!!

  2. I love both apartment – very different in terms of architecture and decoration.
The black and brass looks stunning and I think will remain current as they are all neutrals so you could mix in other elements and still have these as the base of the design. She has also mixed in other neutral tones – taupe, grey and white – so they help to balance the intensity of the black and brass and work to make the interior cohesive!
    Great images!

its played out for a reason, i will never get over black and brass…ever

I think it is great. I love the round coffee tables, perfect for kids! Although we have seen all of the elements before, she has put them together in a fresh new way. It is not overdecorated yet it is not minimalist either. It is comfortable and liveable. It is glamourous and sexy but the pieces remain practical, sturdy – nothing looks too precious -I would romp around in there with kids, flop on the couch and feel relaxed. I personally don’t like the headboard or the ikat, but those are minor elements.

  5. I like both but Astier’s apt… I could move in without changing a thing.

  6. The brass does it for each and every time! Just when I thought I was sick of it. Seeing your post has given me a renewed interest

  7. LOVE these both. Don’t think I could ever live in the cement home due to a string of bad dreams and history but it’s awesome to look at.

  8. i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again- it all depends on teh talent of who is doing the decorating! anything can look played out if done poorly, and played out elements can look fresh all over again when done well.

    both these examples are awesome.

  9. Love both apts. Astiers is beautiful.

  10. I do not care for the first apartment. I lived in a loft with concrete floors for quite sometime and HATED them. At the time it was very trendy and “urban chic”, but really it was just a way for developers to sell a cheap product. The floors were always cold and it was impossible for to clean in the seams.

Okay, on a positive note……I LOVE the second apartment. To me, brass and lacquer is timeless. Obviously its very trendy now, but its been around forevahhhhhhh. I think the space is very tasteful.

  11. The second apartment is my soulmate. I read Elle Decor on the plane this weekend, and that photo spread almost brought me to tears. So I asked Jackie Astier’s apt to marry me and it said YES! As for lacquer and brass being played out: N TO THE OH. I agree with everyone above…some things are never played out. This apt is straight up baller.

  12. I can’t get enough of it. The palatte is neutral enough to be timeless. LOVE IT!
