Oy… Nate.

If I didn’t write “NATE BERKUS SHOW!!!!!” a hundred times on my blog this week, I would have ignored this and pretended this whole day never happened in blogland.

But since I talked about it all week, I cant.

The Nate Berkus Show had over 90 bloggers sitting in their audience today… AND DIDNT EVEN MENTION IT on camera. What a missed opportunity. Seriously.

They had Emily, the blogger and winner of Design Star on the show today. They didn’t mention that she was a blogger… which I thought was a perfect tie in. She redid the house of a bunch of hoarders from Virginia using stuff they already had.

Christian Siriano was there too doing a fashion segment. He helped a woman who gained 40 pounds after losing her job use her one black dress in three different looks…. which basically consisted of recommending she buy stuff from payless. He also failed to mention that he designed all that stuff. (I also think that woman was an actor.)

Then, they had one blogger stand up and show a few snaps of her house. Nate lied that he reads her blog. He forgot to mention the name of it. Woops.

Afterward, he was all about the Q & A with the bloggers… which was more interesting than the actual show. He was very personable, and is spectacularly adorable.

But on the show- no useful tips, nothing. Emily’s pilot was actually MUCH more educational than his show.

And remember how I was pining away for Brian Atwood shoes? Yea? Well, we got gift cards to Payless.

Anyway, to sum it up… People flew in from all over the country to be ignored on the Nate Berkus Show.

Do I blame Nate? No. But I really think his production team totally dropped the ball on this one.

They could have mentioned that over 100 people wrote tributes to him on their blogs on the same day, they could have showed some of the before and after pictures they asked for… A simple “the list of bloggers attending is available online” would have been lame, but sufficed.

I just don’t get it. Why was everyone so unprepared? What was the rush to do the blogger day so soon if they weren’t going to take advantage of it? Why not make it TOTALLY CLEAR to the people traveling from around the globe that nothing was really going to be different?

I know I’m not the only one who felt this way.

Whatever, I’m just disappointed ’cause I thought we were going to be engaged. WOOPS.

  • ur def not the only one! i was there 4get that he didmt mention u guys, the show was so boring and didnt have enough to do w interior design. oprah gave dr oz a show to and all he talks about is dr stuff not clothing, nate should do the same

  • Unbelievable! I’m so disappointed to hear that they blew what was a great opportunity to showcase a lot of great bloggers.

  • Ashley:

What a bummer! I was so excited to watch that epi too! I know you guys mustve been so dissappointed! At least you still had fun, right??? ;)

    • Nicole Cohen:

Yea, Its fun to hang with your friends and go on talk shows… meet people in the green room, you know. I just kept waiting for the moment when it would become clear why we were all there!

  • I hate to say it, but I kind of expected this. It’s a new show and I imagine that the staff is just trying to make it through tapings at this point.

I hoped that it would be a bigger deal, but I don’t think they’re established enough to have it together at this point.

I hope everyone had fun at the after party, though!

  • I’m sorry that the bubble was burst. But on the bright side, it must have been fab to meet so many of your colleagues.. fellow bloggers.. and I the after-party was hopefully a smash too.

I hope that you made some long-lasting connections that will have made this all more than worth while and special for you!

  • Hey there,

Glad to have found your blog via twitter today! I was at the show and completely agree – like hello?? does the fact the 80% of this audience flew in to NYC on a whim, blogged, tweeted, gave you all this free and very powerful PR mean anything?? Thanks for the mention, Nate Show!! It could have been soooo much cooler!!

  • ah thanks for posting about it! i couldn’t believe how impossible the timing was…i absolutely could not get off work and get a flight to NY from california with a week’s notice. it’s really sad that it wasn’t made into much of an event (except for seeing emily!! how cool is that?!) but i’m glad i didn’t miss too much. AND luckily i DVR’d it :)

  • This is SO disheartening. Many of my blog “friends” went, and I’m anxious to hear their perspective on it as well. Had I spent hundreds of dollars on tickets and hotel rooms, I would have been furious. Perhaps they’ll get the hint if it resonates through blogland that it was disappointing (to say the least). At least you got to go to NYC, right? :)

    • Nicole Cohen:

Haha… Well I live here! I only had to travel 10 avenues and I was pissed, so I can only imagine how the others felt! If you look at the twitter with #nateday921 hashtag you’ll see that some people loved it. Or they said they did.

  • I’m SO no surprised. I used to go to TV show tapings when I lived in NYC all the time…I knew a few people who got tickets for my sister & I for free….and their main goal was to FILL the audience. The star is NATE…that’s it. This is the reason I didn’t jump on this whole Nate business..he’s great and I love his work, but not enough to fly to NYC for a show. I am sure you all had better time meeting other bloggers…

I say we all meet in Las Vegas one day just to meet up….ha! :) ))
Glad you wrote about it…good for you. :) ))

    • Nicole Cohen:

I’ve been to other shows too… and arent all the tickets free? Good for you that you knew what to expect!

Nate is one of my favorite designers… but I agree, the best part was meeting everyone!

  • the producers out there clearly aren’t doing their jobs. what a bunch of fucking dumbasses. seriously- you have over 100 DESIGN bloggers who would probably lick nates peehole sitting in your audience and you don’t acknowledge them? i am sorry to all the people who travelled so far for that shit. great that you got to meet everyone, true. that is always fun…but still….a little more planning on their part would have helped.

  • I was there today and was completely underwhelmed by the show as well. Agree with everything you said whole heartedly! I thought it was incredibly weird that they showed pics of a blog and NEVER mentioned her blog name. The best part of the show was the after time with Nate–which wasn’t really even part of the show. Kind of sad really.

  • I became upset at all the hype the other day so I am somewhat happy I didnt drain my bank account just to be a part of it. Although i would have loved to meet all the fellow bloggers. I will say his show has been a piece of junk since day one. I have been trying to give him the benefit of the doubt that its a new show and he has not found his niche, but his niche is interior design. So Nate, lets focus on that and stop asking whats in womens handbags ok?

    xoxo

  • I was very disappointed as well. I had expected something spectacular in show and production (like Oprah) I wanted Nate Berkus and got Ladie’s Home Journal… seriously. He needs to step it up. His audience is smart, classy, intelligent and hugely talented (at least we were!) and his show could have such potential… the first segment could have been on HGTV… the dress for less was blah at best. Yes, the best part was when he interacted with the bloggers. He could have based an entire show on that. It was much more real than the canned applause, laughter, etc they had us doing. The writing was blah… He is adorable and personable and I wish him well. I hope he makes some necessary changes. Deena, was the highlight of the show!

(My blog mysteriously disappeared when I arrived home tonight. Arghh. So that link won’t do much!)

  • Yes you’re correct.. all tix are free from what i’ve heard…i guess i meant VIP tix. So, for harder to get , we got them ahead of the crowd.

  • How disappointing, he could’ve at least done a shout out to you guys for being there… would he have ALL the success he has if it weren’t for the bloggers out there? Well, ok he’d still be super fab but… I’m glad you had a great time though meeting fellow blogger’s and I agree with Jen, let’s do vegas – I totally would fly all that way just to be at that :)

  • Liz:

Oprah had a bunch of mommy bloggers on once, and even the guests (Nienie, and Dooce were some of them) were not allowed to mention the names of their blogs. So I was kind of expecting Nate not to mention them either. At least it was an experience!

    • Liz, I agree yet at the same time, they {Nate Show} could have acknowledged the fact decor/design bloggers were in the audience at least. They were invited

  • I don’t blame his production team, Nate’s name is on the show! He must know what the hell is going on with his show, and knew decor/design bloggers were going to be in the audience? I like Nate, but but but I think there are other people out there, with real talent. Trained talent. Do you think that Nate is just a face? After these reports I’m beginning to wonder?

  • bri:

This is what we call an EPIC FAIL. Good thing you didn’t spend any money on this shit, I agree his show is boring I honestly don’t see it lasting, the network here took Martha off to make room for Nate not very smart. I think Martha appealed to more housewives.

  • DAY-UM.

I have been so envious for a week. I still would’ve loved meeting all of you, but geez. What a waste of all that talent in one room!!!

  • the sad truth is that everyone in that room knew more about how to explain, execute, and showcase good design than nate and anyone on his half-ass production crew. what a nightmare of a show. all ice cream toppings, no ice cream.

    • Nicole Cohen:

Nate is actually one of my favorite designers. But yes, i felt like a groupie.

  • This shit is almost as big as Watergate…only no one has been arrested. YET.

  • Total bummer and here we all were hoping this would join old and new media together for a day. So sad!

  • As a TV Producer, I am mortified by the ineptitude of his team. Sure, they missed out on a huge opportunity to get promotion (free promotion!) for a show that desperately needs some good word of mouth, but the fact that so many people took days off from work and spent their own money to travel to NYC for the taping makes their behavior unforgivable.

  • erin:

I heard it was bad! Makes me feel better for flying out early!

  • They should of hired me to develop their social media strategy. What a wasted opportunity.

  • How disappointing. I would have been pretty upset if I had dropped everything and spent all that money to fly out there. I have been meaning to catch one of his episodes but I am never home early enough and it doesn’t sound like it’s worth my precious DVR space.

  • Well, this makes me feel a lot better about not booking a last minute plane ticket to New York for the Nate Show. It’s too bad that they dropped the ball. I am bummed that I didn’t get to meet all of the great bloggers, though!

  • They sure missed an opportunity! Imagine the free, gracious PR the show would have received from all the bloggers in attendance had they only been made to feel good about being there! It’s too bad the Nate Show missed this chance—because now, the blogs are a-buzzin’ about what a disappointment it was. Sorry about your less-than-stellar experience. :(

  • Wow. Although sad that I missed the blogger afterparty, I am feeling so much better about the decision to stay put yesterday. I would have been SO PISSED if I had trekked up to NYC and thrown my work and family life into chaos for that. Thanks for telling it like it is — there are a lot of sugar coated blogs on this topic today….

  • It sounds really similar to the bloggers that were invited to Martha earlier this year. I am sorry it was disappointing.

  • That’s disappointing. But, I would not have gone to the show expecting my ass to be kissed, though. I would have just expected a few pans into the audience and the acknowledgement that the audience was made up of design bloggers, and how much Nate loves blogs, etc etc. Then I would have featured a few really talented, big, “famous” design bloggers and their homes/sites. That’s ALL I would have expected.

Clearly the production team wanted a massive tweetfest/blogger hysteria to follow all about the show, and underestimated how fucking hard it was for people across the country to get there. For what? Fashion tips?

Not cool, Nate. I’m not impressed by the steamrolling corporate attitude of the whole thing.

    • Nicole Cohen:

When you think of the people sitting in the audience- Jenny of little green notebook- the woman is a DIY phenomenon, Nick Olsen – the kid is the next Miles Redd…. and SO MANY MORE…. what a wasted opportunity.

We were seat fillers, nothing more than a laugh track.

Dont normal talk shows incorporate spontaneous questions from the audience? Why even have a live audience if you dont engage them at all!

  • Meg:

I’m so glad I didnt go now! I was feeling so jealous earlier in the week and regretting not going…it’s too bad. The Moggit girls must be mad!

  • The best part was meeting everyone- that’s why I went not Nate and his sorry show.

  • Eileen Lewis:

I traveled 10 hours to be in the audience and the show was a disaster. I met some great people and got necklace/pendant from Christian’s new website Send the Trend. Besides that, it was a complete waste of time.

  • [...] If you’d like to read more about that particular disappointment, please go to Design Blahg, Sketch42 and/or The Kitchen Designer (which allegedly has a negative comment by one of the producers).  I [...]

  • I’m so sad I didnt get to meet you!! You said what I was thinking 100%. The best part of my day was meeting everyone and not Nate- total bummer but meeting all my blog friends made up for it.

We should plan another nate day minus the nate soon!!

    • Nicole Cohen:

I know- I really wish we met.

I want to throw a blogger cocktail party at my apartment. Where do you live? Would you come?

  • [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by ABC Dragoo, Julia K, tamara stephenson, StacyStyle, Jane Jagger and others. Jane Jagger said: What a waste! RT @sketch42blog: My #nateday921 review… and it aint pretty http://bit.ly/aIiNVC [...]

  • I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. Nate is a television personality and a decorator, not an interior designer (I believe his degrees are in sociology and french?), so it’s no surprise that the show was light on design.

  • I love his decorating, too! He is an amazingly talented room stylist, and I can imagine that he is an extraordinary project manager. Additionally, he has a very sweet personality, but he does not have the educational background in construction, design, building codes, human anthropometrics, etc.,to represent himself as an interior designer.

    • Nicole Cohen:

Im sure he has people on staff that know the codes etc… so he does represent an interior design firm doesnt he?
Wait- I actually just looked it up: Its a full service design firm, lead by 2 different design directors that “stay true to his viewpoint”… I guess he isnt really that involved.
