Forget Fashion Week…

Every year, fall fashion debuts itself in shuls across America.

I’m talking about the High Holies, of course.

Come September, mystical clothes called “HOLIDAY CLOTHES”  come out of shopping bags. Seasonally inappropriate or not, brand new fur collars and caplets, cashmere shawls and wool suits are everywhere. It could really be the first mass showing of fall fashion… Even though it is really still technically summer until Sept 21.

I have distinct and unpleasant memories of  being forced into pleated plaid skirts with capes and berets  when I was a kid and YOU KNOW I had to match with my 3 younger sisters… UGH. (P.S. my mom still has these clothes and Cookie will probably be wearing them soon.)

I stay at the shore for the holidays where things are SUPER CASUAL… BUT if I did care about things like buying new clothes for the holdidays these are some of the things I would buy.

My rules are:

Dont look too seasonally inappropriate. If its over 75 FUR is NOT ALLOWED.

Dont try to call attention to yourself. Limit your jewel size. This is shul people.

Do think about separates and light sweaters. Sometimes its freezing inside, but 90 degrees on the walk home.

Tights revolt me unless they are black opaque. This time of year, do without.

You can wear summer clothes/old clothes if you keep your look low key. No florals or white linens etc.

Keep it covered up, but not too covered. Knee length skirts, or right above the knee are perfect. Prairie skirts, maxi dresses etc are a no.

Some of my picks from Net-a-Porter…

Sheath Dresses….

RM by Roland Mouret

Alexander Wang

Pencil skirts are PERFECT for this…. Paul & JoeGiambattista Valli Moschino

Im loving the nude neutral….
Miu Miu

Alexander McQueen

Little tweed jackets. A little wintery but you can take it off. Oscar de la Renta Tweed Jacket

I want that coat…. so I just had to post it. But anyway… Fendi Skirt

My mom called me preppy the other day. I think my style is preppy meets lazy. Most of the time my fashion goals are “Dont look bad.” ( I actually feel that thats a very underestimated idea when thinking about fashion. So many people are trying to look hip and trendy, that they forget about not looking BAD. )

Whats your style? How do you dress up for your holidays?

I have a few black pencil skirts and I wear those with silk tops and light sweaters or blazers. And thats it. Every year.

Next week, I’ll pick out the best non-leather shoes for Yom Kippur.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

(Just FYI, I have posts set up for the next few days, so you can still get your fix.)

  • I hate it when shuls become runways… I always stay away from those, and I find it’s even worse in the US (especially Flatbush.)
Good advice! I’ll be wearing a black a-line skirt + a coral cardi (if it’s not too hot).

Its insane in Brooklyn. Not kidding.

I never stayed in Manhattan for the holidays because my family isnt there but I am sure its even crazier there. Although walking up 5th ave in fancy clothes does appeal to me.

  • fab pics here, I’m need to get myself some new fall pieces asap.

  • ill be rocking the pencil skirt for dinner tomorrow. always a safe bet for the high holidays.

  • It’s like the first day of school. You want to wear all your new Fall clothes (or old faves), the sweater, the jacket, the plaid skirt, the boots – and it’s still 90 degrees out!
    xo xo

  • Great post! Even growing up in Rockland County, NY it was like that! Happy New Year Nicole.
    “Chanel” tova!!! xx

  • Kim:

Nicole! I remember the berets! lol

  • Rachel:

This post is too funny. I’ll never forget when someone walked into shul on a warm rosh hashana day in her new cashmere sweater with matching GLOVES! I wore a pencil skirt with a silk top too, guess that’s the uniform. The in between weather is always difficult to dress for, especially the kids. My son nearly threw a fit when I made him wear long cotton pants on thurs, on friday I let him put back on his summer shorts.
