Why someone should fire Vern Yip.

This HGTV Urban Oasis. It’s at the W Residences downtown.

The hallway: CB2 meets Pearl River Mart. The living room: 2 stools does not equal 1 coffee table. Looks like he left last years dead christmas wreath below the console. Whatever that thing is by the window, I hate it. A barcelona style daybed(I think its the one by Oly) and a louis ghost chair. How original. I dont know what this is… Looks like the rug from the living room carries into the dining room, which is also the kitchen. And that chest against the dining table. Fail. Everything on the table: Double Fail. Looks like I’m sleeping in my daughters bathroom. Subway tile is not for bedrooms vern. Neither are those gremlins on pedestals instead of night stands or lights. Very functional.

I like the bathroom. Especially the floor. Who wants to bet the bathroom is standard in every suite at the W?

What do you think?

  • It’s not. I live in Dallas,TX and the W hotel looks nothing like this at all. Period.

    • Nicole Cohen:

I just meant the bathroom… the only thing I liked was not something vern did.

  • Emily:

Wow. He sucks more than I thought. Stunning.

I really want to burn that stupid moose and wreath

  • Phyllis:

While I like most of the furniture, I’d have to get rid of the dining table and chairs. Pity the poor person is the chair by the window edge. I would think it’d be very uncomfortable to sit there. Visually the table & chairs are lost against the dark wood cabinets in the kitchen, not to mention how cliche they are. That’s the problem with fads. They are “old news” before you can blink your eyes.

The art is okay, but all the accessories would have to go. Was Vern on a safari when picking out accessories? Lions, deer (or are they moose?), etc – it’s a mishmash of statuary. Not liking the vases either – same vase in different colors. The orange one in the bedroom is okay, though I would have loved the turquoise one in there better. The room needs a splash of something other than orange.

The bedding and night stands are strange too. Grecian motif bedding with gremlins on tall bedside pedestals with oversized subway tile walls. Yawn – ditto comments about fad design. Nothing makes sense.

You are right, 2 stools do not make a coffee table.

    • Nicole Cohen:

The Couch and bed dont bother me… Neither does the daybed. Its just the way everything was put together that makes it look like a bad Cb2 catalog. Seriously, the stylists at Cb2 are much better than Vern.

I also hate that the art above the couch looks like another flat screen.

  • Lisa:

You couldn’t be more right, this is bad.

    • GB:

You think this is bad?!, you should see the bizzare mess he made of the Chicago 2011 apt.

      • Nicole Cohen:

Just looked it up… I dont get why he has a job in design! its a freakin MESS!

  • Phyllis:

Yes, you are right. The glass on the art above the sofa should have been non-glare. Reflection from the window causes the artwork to be lost. It does look like another flat screen. Small decisons and attention to detail can make all the difference.

  • i don’t think it’s THAT bad…there are plenty of oddities that don’t offer any functionality…and not odd in a good way…like i don’t get the moose at all…and a lot of it sucks to be sure…but i actually kind of like the kitchen and i think the chest is unexpected. and i’ll bet it serves some storage purpose. LOVE the rug,it’s gorgeous. but vern still sucks.
and the bedroom is the worst.

    • Nicole Cohen:

Its not that its THAT bad, its that it isnt good. And Vern shouldnt be dispensing his crap into the world. He is no better and in fact probably far worse than Emily or Michael or Casey at designing.

Imagine this apartment was on the show. He would rip it a new one.

My problems are: The bedroom looks like a bathroom and has monsters instead of nightstands and lamps. There are no lights in that room btw.

The living room is ok, but has a huge gap where a coffee table should be.

The rug goes into the kitchen.

      The styling sucks.

So to recap: Vern should be fired as a judge of Design Star.

  • Samantha Swain:

I love the critique, it was exactly what I was thinking in my head, You put it into words perfectly.

Unfortunately I am in Sydney Australia and have not seen Design star.

    • Nicole Cohen:

Thanks Samantha- You arent missing much… you could read Jenny of My favorite and my bests recaps. Thats more than enough.

  • check the hollywood W res. i posted on it a few back and it’s the ultimate bach pad. there are some over the top elements but it ultimately is the thing that led me to the Zevs bleeding chanel art.

  • Shelly Eaton:

Does anyone know where the couch came from, can’t find it on the HGTV Urban Oasis site. Love the versatility.

PS. – the strange pilers by the bed DO have lights in them, look again. Though I ditto you on the white large subway tile on the bedroom wall. what was he thinkin?

  • Joy:

If you think this is bad, check out the new 2011 Urban Oasis. It makes this one look like a dream come true. It has the same typical “vintage vomit meets the city dump”-Vern Yip style. Seriously, his newest design, in the Trump Towers of all places, is HORRIBLE!!!!!

  • Naomi:

I really don’t know why HGTV selected him to be a judge on Design Star. His style of design is almost grotesque and if you see his earlier work from DIY and Trading Spaces, you will see how he has no depth or personal style at all…he just basically buys cheap looking furniture, adds a throw pillow, and calls it stunning. Vern is a horrible designer and has no credentials to sit at the same table as Candice Olsen. Sorry, Vern, but what makes you even more of a turn off is that you actually think you’re a good designer. When I see you tearing apart contestants on design star for some design choices that are actually better than your own work, I just feel like throwing up. You’re not the Simon Cowell of the design world so just put a sock in it. You have no business being on television. I’ve seen interns do far more amazing work than you.

  • GB:

I don’t think Mr. Yip will make it into the beautiful classics and style of the likes of Architectural Digest. He takes beautiful views 2010 and 2011-Urban Oasis and treats the space as though it is all about him (a misch mash of shabby chic).

    • Nicole Cohen:

I honestly think he just makes bad looking rooms with cheap looking design… But what do I know!
