Cookie’s room is the black hole of the house.
It looks like crap. And everything crappy just gets sent there.
Why?
Because of that damned “accent wall.” Now you see, I know better than to do something as pathetic as one wall of wallpaper, NOW, but 2 years ago, I was told (HUSBAND) that the entire room of this birdy wallpaper would look crazy.
I grew up in a room like that, and I loved it. Even the bedspread, curtains around the bed and chair fabric matched the walls…. and I liked it.
But hey, maybe this would be too crazy. And I would consider doing it right now, but its been two years. Whats the chances that the dye lots will be the same?
So get this: I had 3 different wall colors going on in this 10 x 10 room. One wallpaper, one green as you see and the small wall of the windows was PINK!
I want to vomit as I write this.
Anyway, I am repainting, because I moved some shelving around and now the walls MUST be repainted. WHAT THE HECK SHOULD I DO?
I still love the wallpaper, but…. is it just hopeless?
Becca June and I had the idea to paint the other walls high gloss, maybe pink or lavender. What do you think of that?
I even considered various grays and peaches… Any color will match, EXCEPT for the insipid mint green I have up there now.
(Oh, and I dont want you guys to think that I universally suck at kids rooms. I am almost finished with my niece’s room, 17, and my nephews,3 and 4 and BOTH of those rooms look much better than this. Cohesive. All the walls are the same colors. I’ll show you guys some previews later… We are still waiting on stuff though!)
**** WAIT!
I just thought of a solution. What about doing this:

Paneling it out so that it doesnt look like a LAME-O accent wall? YES?
Still need a wall color…

Nice of you to blame me.
You had free rein, check your previous posts about how happy you are that your husband doesn’t get involved.

You forget that you specifically said you want me to only do one wall and that I could “always add more!”
This is why you have no say.

Haha, I’m enjoying the bickering above
What if you painted the walls something a little brighter and more deep — like the color from the underbelly of the birds. Its almost a coral. Or the darker color of the leaves, like an army green?
Go bold or go home, that’s my outlook!
Hahaha…
Kate- I actually have two hides of coral leather that I am saving for something… I was considering using it as a headboard or something in here when cookie gets a little older. i love the idea of the coral. I worry about the army green. I was trying to find a gray/green but I worry it will look too drab.
I agree… I wimped out from the start and thats why the room looks bad!
I love the idea of paneling it out and think it would look gorgeous. For the other walls I really like the color of the splotch you painted on the right one up from the bottom– I guess it’s like a muted grayish green. It would probably look great with coral accents too.
I LOVE the paneling idea. And I agree with Aubre – like the gray color. Although I’m partial to gray lately (every room in my house is now painted a different shade of gray)… Also, I like coral accents better than the idea of a coral wall, but maybe that’s just me. Your house is amazing – I’m sure this room will turn out equally so!
I like the idea of going a deeper color- from the swatches you have, I think the second from the left, in the second row from below will work best. And yes, you should do a coral headboard!!!! (more exclamation points)
I think you had the right gut feeling from the beginning, but no use crying on spilled milk and you can just be happy your husband doesn’t have a say on decor most of the time (mine holds me back decor-wise all the time.)
funny how u got stuck with mint green and pink! two colors that overwhelmed us our whole life
I’m digging that wallpaper.
Get the wall paper. The dye lot might be off, but not that much.. You can always do a wash with a glaze in it over all of the wallpaper, old and new to make it look like it came from the same dye lot.
Always follow your first gut reaction. You already knew and felt how the room should look – completely wall papered
xo xo
Haha
I do agree with Visual Vamp. In any room each wall looks different because the way the light hits it. So try the wallpaper. If you cannot get any more, a medium green from the wallpaper, not a light one, would be a good choice. Also, the color of the birds’ wings, a greyish something. If you picked three colors, get them mixed at Janovic Plaza, then paint really large swatches close to the wallpaper, so you can see the contrast better. Check the colors in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Pick one. This is not brain surgery. You are going to put up shelves, and art, and won’t be sitting in there staring at the walls. I don’t think you need to frame out the wallpaper wall yet. Wait until most of the room is done before you make the decision.
I wouldn’t waste coral leather on a kid’s headboard. You never know what they are going to do. A coral canvas twill or an ottoman rib would be just as nice. The coral leather would make nice pillows in your living room when you get tired of two colors.
The most important factor in a kid’s room is what is IN the room. Every little girl needs a table and several chairs (Childcraft), papers, markers, scissors, tape, stickers, and as I was told when I outfitted my kid”s room ( by the kid) – a waste basket. So relax. The most important thing is the kid experience. Take her to the Korean and let her touch all the fruits and vegetables and buy the really weird ones and open them up. Pretty soon she’ll be going to nursery school and making potato latkes and will want to cook every time it rains. Ann
I like the panel idea and if you are going to paint instead of more wallpaper paint the rest of the room the background color of the wallpaper. It will look more unified and less accent wallish. I think an entire room in that wallpaper would be awesome.
high gloss!
What about picking a color that matches the background of the wallpaper? I didnt read the other comments so maybe someone already suggested that. Then bring in accent colors from the birds, that coral color and the blue. I dont know, maybe I’m way off with that idea- I’d have to see the room in person to know for sure if it would work, but its just an idea I thought I would throw out there
