Too much stuff syndrome:

This house, featured on Desire to Inspire, has all the elements of a room I would like. It’s bright,  it’s black and white, and it’s got great bones. There is only one problem:

Someone needs to fire the goddamn stylist. Why oh why, is there so much clutter?!?
I’m not against clutter. I like it. I think it helps visually enhance a room, especially for pictures. Just ask Lonny. They love those cluttered vignettes. But, it has to be carefully chosen and just the right amount of it too.

First, they need to remove those 4 matching pillows from the couch. Then they need to take off one of the two blankets. When someone drapes a blanket like that on a couch, it makes me think its stained.

Then, remove the lamp from the ottoman coffee table thats draped in the berber wedding blanket. Maybe put the blanket on the couch. There is another coffee table there too… with a little candelabra and some books. we move the candles, leave the books and add a little bowl or something.

There is a whole PILE of blankets in the back there near the chairs. People, can we agree that a living room only needs 1 blanket on display?
Two consoles flanking a zebra rug. I dont even know whats going on on the black console, But I just want to SWEEP it all onto the floor. I love the sconces though.  And the art. You don’t have to put all your magazines and books out, just FYI.

The antlers on that white vase in the window are making me queasy.
It actually looks not so bad from this angle. I love the lamps, although the shades are a little short.

To be clear, I think all the furniture, art, lamps and rugs in this house are awesome. I just want to have a tag sale in there to clear out some of the tchotckes.

Perfect opportunity to remind you all that next week is the BLOGGER TAG SALE! Woohoo! I have some really AWESOME things to sell, at amazing prices. Stuff that I loved enough to buy but that eventually didnt work for me. Stuff you will like. Stuff I like. But I need to keep it lean and mean over here. I like the idea of constantly swapping things out and buying new things. Its fun! My house is always evolving and I love that.

Check out our invitation on Facebook to see who will be attending. And you can join in too. Just let me know!

  • When I first saw this space, I thought it was a store. Actually, setting up a cash register and a gentleman of the fey persuasion might help clear that place out.

  • Nicole Cohen:

The ottoman/coffee table situation is still a mystery to me.

  • Shannon:

A lamp on an ottoman is just plain crazy…and it’s on a tray.

  • Agreed. I just really, really like that massive cabinet with the dishes in it. oh my god.

  • Ann Wilson:

Are you kidding me? The first picture looks like a store. Guaranteed no one lives here, it’s just for a photo shoot. When you sit on the sofa, you could kick the lamp on the ottoman-coffee table. Also, you don’t put a modern leather sofa in a sunroom. It would get hot, ruin the leather and you would stick to it when you sit down. Another thing, piles of magazines collects dust like you wouldn’t believe.

  • Ann:

Nicole, I’ve just spent 45 minutes looking through desire to inspire to find the original shot of this room. Is it before May 1st? Also that looks like a real zebra rug. You don’t put one in the traffic pattern. You are right about the lamp shades. They are too short and not wide enough. They need to balance the weight of the lamp. A rectangular shade might be a better choice. (Shandells.com) I must admit I’m getting really tired of community college design graduates authoring blogs and writing tutorials on bookshelf styling, and vinyl letter placement., etc., etc. (Do not use Reader’s Digest Condensed Books just because you like the color). And, anyone that says French grain bags are over probably can’t afford to buy a real one, much less use them in upholstery. They are made of flax and linen and are really cute for dog beds, and big pillows for the bed. Thanks for listening. I’ll sign up to get you delivered every day if I can figure out how.

    • Nicole Cohen:

It is from way before May 1st. Maybe from last year… Im not sure. I think it is a real zebra rug.

Are you sure you want to read my blog? I have no design degree! ;)
