In which I ruin multiple household items and some ikat.

Today I quite stupidly attempted to spray glue ikat to the back of a lucite tray. The tray is the Format tray from CB2 and the ikat was a sample I had laying around for some time. It is from my favorite source UzbekAlive.
I knew the fabric was too narrow and the spray glue would fog up the lucite. And I had no idea how to finish the edges of the fabric.

And to top it off I didnt lay down newspaper paper first(even though it was right there!), so my dining table is covered with glue. I tried to use nail polish remover to get it off. It almost works.

This thing looks so crappy when I dont put stuff on it… You can see the edges here. Any tips on what I should do to finish them off?

the tray you bought from cb2! ha you know if i bought it, it would remain a clear lucite tray and nothing more!! but the ikat print looks awesome in the pics…can’t you cut it perfectly to fit the tray? or fold the edges them over? truthfully what do i know…..

  • Nicole Cohen:

LOL!! I dont know where I even came up with this idea!

I cant cut it perfectly cause the edges are fraying a little. I tried to fold it over but it wouldnt stick. Hmmm…. maybe I can glue gun it somehow… Or I might just have to accept its imperfections.

    I would either:

    a. cover the entire piece with the fabric, which would look hot
    b. cover the inner bottom with a piece of fabric
    c. leave as is and use modge podge over the frayed edges, which should dry clear

Finally, use Goof Off on the table (www.goof-off.com) which works wonders at removing adhesives

    you’re welcome ;)

  • Nicole Cohen:

Who knew Gay Hooks had so many tricks up his sleeve? I love it!

Im so into either a. or c. I might not have enough for a.

And Goo Off! Is it better than Goo Gone?

  • hannah:

u can buy “fray check” or just get from ur hubby ..it will the seal the edges..put it on let it dry then cut it with a xacto knife.

    • Nicole Cohen:

Thanks Hannah! I need to think these projects through before I start them!

  • I have two of those trays, love them! I am a complete loser when it comes to DIY projects, but every time I take out those trays, I get a little itch to do something like that! Can you outline the edges with a small but bright ropey trim? Doesn’t look bad at all in the pics! And, dying over that ikat blouse! LOVE IT!

  • Nicole Cohen:

I also have another lucite tray, but its not from cb2. It looks exactly like it though!
When I got the new one, I knew I had to do something to it! It actually looks good when you dont look too closely. I am going to glue the edges down.

    Sarah Bailey wears ikat.

You can buy an iron on interfacing. Wonder Under? There are many different brands and weights. If you iron on a big piece of this stuff, then trim the whole piece to fit the tray, it should not fray for several years. I do this to fabric to make Christmas gift tags. Actually I use three layers: the top, the interfacing and then a coordinating backing. Trim, punch a hole, and use a Sharpie to write: To Betsy from Santa or whatever. They last for years and I use them over and over. I got really lazy (or tired) about Christmas. I figured out one year that I had been wrapping presents for over thirty five years. I started making bags out of Christmas fabric, all sizes. Now we just reuse the bags and the tags.
