The saddest thing about this apartment…

… is how much it probably cost. Who could live like this? The apartment seems so disjointed and strange. Different types of flooring, weird built-ins, spare furniture, those spotlights in the ceiling? How do they watch that TV?

I found this home on the Contemporist and this was the Project descriptionby Stefan Boublil included on the site.

Combining 3 smaller apartments into one at one of new york city’s most coveted uptown addresses, we delivered a stunning new dwelling on the 61st floor of the metropolitan tower. Every single room is constructed so that the postcard view of central park is the star. With a built-in wraparound sofa, a secret door in the solid walnut library and distributed surround sound all over the home, this project is an ode to the 80s during which the building was erected.

Suited for a family of 4 with 2 children, the communal living spaces stands in between the master suite and the kids’ rooms, hidden behind the aforementioned trap door in the library, thereby providing a buffer of sight and sound.

The kitchen and dining area is the only ones wrapped in waxed concrete thereby giving it a theatrical feel, especially when see from the rest of the apartment which is clad in bleached pine and subdued colors.

I might describe the final result as having a monastery + cowboy ranch + 80s vibe…

In NYC on the 61 floor of some building. My bet is olympic tower on 5th avenue and 51. Or could be Time Warner or trump tower.

I feel so bad for whoever lives there. Especially the kids with those built-ins and murphey beds.

I have seen a lot of apartments that totally sacrifice comfortable living for the sake of the view. It’s so dumb. Beds on the wrong walls, TVs coming out of boxes, and sofas that stare out the window. Sometimes floor to cieling windows are a burden.

  • i really.really.really.love that sink!

  • Normally i don’t respond to a post like this, but since i really liked it I just had to give you a thumbs up :)

Whoever designed the kitchen should be shot. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They probably didnt mind because people in manhattan dont cook.

    • Nicole Cohen:

The kitchen is by far the worst part. Not even because of the cooking problem, more because of that bizarre pointed corner and that AWFUL color scheme. It looks like a tomb.

  • Teddy:

Awful. No one thing fits with another. Are those pickled floors? In the kitchen, when you pull a roast out of the oven, look at the obstacle course you must run to get it to the table. And those red chairs popping up everywhere? And the cheap-ass high-gloss Yamaha upright piano slotted in between those barn planks? And btw, what are those award-thingys — Emmys?

    • Nicole Cohen:

I think the worst thing by FAR is that kitchen. I mean that crazy shape and somber finishes!!! SCARY! Oh yea, and I didnt even notice that those red chairs were everywhere. That whole dining room is trying to express “creepy” if you ask me!
